MOUNTAIN SAFETY TARANAKI – COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

OUTDOOR FIRST AID COURSE (Full Course – Weekend Duration)

A comprehensive course covering the type of situations that can occur in the

backcountry. The emphasis is on: improvisation, coping without emergency

services, evacuation and group management. An Outdoor First Aid

certificate, that is valid for two years, is issued to all successful participants. Six

hours of practical scenario-based work. Includes Unit Standards 6400, 6401,

6402 and 424.

BASIC BUSHCRAFT

This course is aimed at the beginner tramper who is wishing to be trained in

the basics of outdoor recreation. The topics covered include river safety, gear

and trip planning, hypothermia, survival, basic map & compass, food and

cookers, and an introduction to risk management.

INTERMEDIATE BUSHCRAFT

A course for the more experienced tramper who wishes to gain further skills. A

trip away is included. This will include planning a trip under the supervison of

MSC Instructors.

RIVER SAFETY INSTRUCTION

River crossing methods and techniques, risk management and river dynamics

are covered on this course. It is designed for both the tramper who wishes to

up-skill on techniques and the novice. A practical is included.

AVALANCHE AWARENESS

This course provides the first step in gaining an appreciation of the avalanche

phenomenon and what is needed to make decisions about personal safety

when travelling in Avalanche terrain. The course focuses on avoiding the need

for avalanche related rescue, but also dedicates time to learning the

technical skills required for rescuing a companion or small party. It covers

mountain weather, identification of avalanche terrain, basic route finding and

decision making, companion rescue and safety equipment (including use of

transceivers).
